Holocaust Memorial Day this past week, held on the date of the liberation of Auschwitz, prompted publication of several unusual Holocaust themed articles. Here’s one by Dara Horn, who introduces us to the memoir of Zalman Gradowski. Dara runs us througb a brief analysis of what types of characters most Holocaust Memorials or educational curricula present, critiquing the one-dimensional and disempowering agenda. She wants us to hear the cold baldfaced truth of one who did not survive but who did stand up. Brutal al the truth can be.

The 80 year commemoration of the Bricha, the quasi-spontaneous and quasi-organized movement of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe after the war was marked by a reunion of survivors at the site of a DP camp. Many subsequently took part in the effort to break through the British cordon preventing Jews from reach the land of Israel (Ha-Hapalah). This part of the story is seldom told, yet it is a tale of heroism and resilience. Check out The Long Way Home, a documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman with some amazing footage and interviews.
