Is this a cynic’s view of the Poland trip experience, or an insightful article into how Poles understand the burden of hosting both the Shoah and its students? The writing is delightful, not light but not turgid; appropriate for its purpose.

I once asked an Arab Israel lawyer from Jat if he would consent to marry an Arab woman from Gaza. He laughed - I wouldn’t marry an Arab woman from Baka! Baka is about 100 meters down the road from where he lives. The villages have become so enmeshed it is impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. They are governed by one combined regional council. But the guy from Jat and the babe from Baka are foreigners to each other. That’s when I realized that the Western concept of nationalism is weak to non-existent in the Arab world.
That’s no sin - social organization by nationality is an idea only a few hundred years old in the West. World over, most people are loyal to a town or an extended family or tribe. Trouble starts when we try to force Western concepts of governance onto areas that see their identity formed through family, clan or tribe. That[s not primitive, it’s just different. So the findings of this survey should not surprise.
She just is who she is, like it or not.
